What’s in a number?

Our latest episode, I’m Happy Just To Dance With You went up three days ago. It’s already got some good (for us) download numbers. In fact, over the last two months, initial downloads have started to get a little bit better but it’s hard to know why.

It’s possible that it has coincided with being a little bit more active on Twitter and starting up this blog although there’s little evidence that people are linking from one to another. It’s also possible that we’re just getting better – we think we are. The thing is, we just don’t know.

To be fair, we are talking about tiny, tiny ripples in a big pond. However, I can think of no reason why Please Mr Postman is our second most downloaded episode and continues to get downloaded more than all but the most recent episodes. I’ve even tried putting in a few selected Google searches and our episode doesn’t even scratch the surface of page 12. It could be an interest that people have in the song itself but that makes it interesting that it has been download four times more than the following episode, Roll Over Beethoven. Although perhaps it shows that the classic girl groups have a more lasting appeal than the much hyped originators of rock and/or roll.

The latest episode has, in just three days, got more downloads than some of our episodes have received in their entire digital life. Whilst I’m delighted by that, I am a little sad for our neglected digital children:

Devil in her heart

Money

Perhaps because our numbers are relatively small, we haven’t been able to build up the audience interaction. Let’s face it, it is perfectly possible that we’re hitting a different hundred or so listening with each episode and there certainly are enough Beatles fans out there to go round. We might get lucky with a few episodes and hit on the recognition of big name, known song (although you would have thought that A Hard Day’s Night or I Want To Hold Your Hand might have fallen into that category). But if we don’t, we’ll continue to have fun catching up and chatting about a great song catalogue.

One thing we would like to get is a range of guest voices to get some different perspectives. This will be particularly important to add some zest to episodes about album tracks where, otherwise, we might simply say “It’s an ok Beatles track but it would be great by most other bands’ standards”.

Let me know on Twitter or leave a comment below or just surrender to the void. It’s all good.
