Writing about music seems to miss the point, doesn’t it? Writing about music that so many other people have written about also seems to be missing the point. Admittedly, they may be different points.
Of all the bands in all the world, you might think that The Beatles don’t need to have more written about them. And yet, here we are. They remain the most iconic band in music history. I would argue that there isn’t enough written about them.
But then I would say that. Together with my friend, JG, I’ve recorded 37 episodes* of the Beatles Stuffology podcast. Each episode sees us discuss a different Beatles song. We are going in chronological order. The most recent episode discusses I Should Have Known Better in weird and wonderful detail.
This site will keep you updated about the latest episodes but will also attempt to answer questions such as:
Does the film of A Hard Day’s Night contain the greatest collection of pop videos ever?
Did The Beatles watch It’s Trad Dad before hiring Richard Lester?
When did Richard Lester change to Dick and back again?
Can you read too much into things?
Exactly why does our Please Mr Postman episode get more downloads each week than the others?
Why have we decided to pick a simplistic and pointlessly subjective way of ranking each song?
Would JG actually notice if I changed some of his scores?
Will we find a number low enough to score Mr Moonlight?
Thirty-seven episodes in. I’m trying not to work out how many more we’ve got to go. It feels like a lot, especially when we’ve still got Beatles For Sale ahead. At least then we’ll start to hit the classics (in around 2025 at this rate).
*For the record, I just turn up and talk. JG does the recording, the editing and the publishing…
